Illustrating and Writing Children's Books

Have you ever dreamed of writing a story for children? Do you have a notebook full of ideas but aren’t sure where to begin? Or maybe you’re new to writing for kids and are looking for guidance, inspiration, and feedback from other creative minds?
Join Jennifer Carson—local author, illustrator, editor, and Book Production Manager for Chicken Scratch Books—for an inspiring six-week course designed to guide you through the process of creating your very own children’s story, from concept to illustrated page!
You’ll learn the fundamentals of writing engaging stories for young readers: crafting memorable characters, developing a strong narrative structure, and writing with rhythm and heart. Along the way, you’ll receive supportive peer and instructor feedback to help refine your ideas and strengthen your writing voice.
In addition to writing, this unique class includes a hands-on art component where you’ll learn to create simple illustrations that complement your story. Experiment with ink and watercolor as Jennifer shares techniques for visual storytelling, page layout design, and pairing images with text to bring your story to life.
All you need to bring is a pencil or pen, a notebook, and your imagination! All other supplies will be provided. No prior writing or art experience is necessary—just come ready to explore and enjoy the creative process from start to finish.
There is no class on Monday, March 30th.
This class is non-refundable once you enroll. Missed sessions will not be reimbursed. Participants must be ages 14+.
